

Tippett: Well, that question then I think echos through the rest of your life. So already I was kind of thinking “hmm? I wonder how things work in this world?” And I believe, that was before we first came to the United States. But that gives you a little bit of an indication on where my mindset was. I thought that what I really wanted to do was to understand. I remember, as a five-year-old - at the age when people want to say, when I grow up I want to do whatever.

Ma: So, I think I’ve tried for all my life to make sense of things. And in terms of a spiritual worldview my mother was Protestant, my father was more or less Buddhist, and, I grew up more or less Episcopalian. Ma: Well, as you can tell from the brief bio, I grew up pretty confused because there would be all these languages floating around, different messages floating around. I want to ask the question this way - was there a religious or spiritual background to that childhood of yours? However you want to define that. And then you straddled another world when you moved to the U.S. Tippett: You were born to Chinese parents in Paris. And then, getting ready for this, I’ve been reading a lot of other interviews you’ve given and things you’ve written. I’ve been listening to your music forever.
